Other Life & Health Science @ Aston
Cellular & Clinical Neurophysiology
Our biomedical and clinical neuroscientists work together on a range of pharmacological, surgical and non-invasive investigations and interventions. These research activities focus on neurological and neurodegenerative disease using molecular, cellular and system neurophysiological techniques and provide a framework for the development of translational research methodologies. Examples include:
- Characterising neuronal oscillatory activity in health and disease for differential diagnosis and treatment
- Developing a molecular understanding of the relevant receptors to allow the design of new drugs
Clinical Vision Sciences
Our optometrists and ophthalmologists work within an integrated investigative framework to significantly advance understanding of the development, use, preservation and restoration of ocular function. A bidirectional transfer of knowledge between structure, function and clinical application enables us to flexibly address a range of contemporary research issues:
- The development and management of refractive error
- The diagnosis and management of major ocular pathology
- The management of ocular dysfunction and pathology in the ageing eye
Cognitive & Perceptual Systems
As a group of cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists, we combine our expertise to advance the understanding of human perceptual and cognitive systems through:
- Behavioural studies
- Functional imaging (EEG, MEG, fMRI)
- Theoretical development
- Computational modelling
We collaborate widely with clinical practitioners to apply this knowledge to the development of improved clinical methods in optometry, audiology, and neuropsychology.
