Chronic Diseases
Our research teams are adopting interdisciplinary approaches from biomedical sciences and health psychology to:
- Improve understanding of the biological processes that control chronic diseases including inflammation, fibrosis and metabolism
- Develop improved methods of disease prevention, management and therapy through nutritional, medicinal and behavioural intervention
- Advance understanding of cognitive processes that influence the development, management and self-management of chronic disease

Our communicable diseases research theme comprises several core research projects:

Our clinical microbiologists work with practitioners to:
- Improve understanding of the host response to transmissible agents in health and disease
- Develop innovative approaches for early, sensitive and specific diagnosis, control and treatment of infectious diseases
- Design new drug treatments which are effective against resistant organisms
- Develop improved medicines through formulation or delivery
- Evaluate the efficacy of anti-infectives in vivo
- Improve practitioner understanding to ensure appropriate and effective use of anti-infectives within the healthcare environment
