Non-Stinging Adhesive Formulation
Scientists at Aston University have developed a sting-free, quick drying, easily removable adhesive liquid formulation for fixing dressings, plasters and other external devices to the skin. This formulation can also be used as a barrier to protect skin against adhesive-induced trauma.
- Protects against abrasive, aggressive and strong adhesives
- Sting-free
- Quick drying
- Non-toxic
- Conforms to irregular topologies
- Easily removable
- Long shelf life
Background
Clinical practitioners frequently use adhesives to fix dressings and other external devices to the skin. Dressings are applied around sensitive wounds and surgically-constructed openings such as stoma. External devices such as colostomy bags are also adhered to the skin. Existing formulations however often contain high concentrations of alcohol or organic solvents. Patients typically dislike such formulations as they sting when applied to the skin and an adhesive removal kit is required to clean the skin around the wound.
The Technology
The invention seeks to ease patient discomfort while ensuring that the dressing or external device is easily removed. This water-based formulation may be used as an adhesive in its own right or as a barrier to protect against irritation or trauma when using other products or devices. The adhesive can be easily applied with a wipe and easily removed by washing with soapy water. The components of this solution do not separate over time, extending shelf life.
